Statement of Dr.Subramanian Swamy, Janata Party President made in Boston
It is wholly wrong, as a wire service has made out, that US based NRIs are supportive of the Indo-US Nuclear Deal as just approved by the US House of Representatives. What this House passed is different from what the US Senate is considering to pass soon, and thereafter, it will have to be reconciled as a final statement. I have been addressing meetings of US based NRIs in several cities of the US, and I find that just as in India there are two opinions here, but the dominant view opposes the deal. There are three distinct reasons for this opposition. First, the US legislature has tagged onto the 2005 Bush-Singh draft framework totally unacceptable caveats that make the deal as an exercise in deception. The Indian Parliament has no clue about these new bindings on India. The US Secretary Of State Ms. Condoleesa Rice has made the intention doubly clear to a gathering of US based NRIs very recently that India will have to in effect comply with the provisions of the NPT without being recognised as a nuclear weapons power. That is India will not be in the league of China, Britain, France and Russia in the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Second, there will be a cap on Thorium research because India will have to divert funds of the Atomic Energy Budget to purchase US enriched uranium nuclear reactors for power production, and purchase the needed uranium from the US as well to fuel the imported reactors. These reactors will not come free of cost even if they are lying in disuse in warehouses in the US. In effect India will have to deviate from the path to move to self-reliance in nuclear energy through the Thorium cycle for want of funds. Third, even the military reactors, claimed to be kept outside the purview of inspection, cannot use the fissile materials produced in the safeguarded civilian reactors without coming under full scope safeguards permanently, whether the deal is terminated or not in the future. Moreover, if the US Atomic Energy Commission suspects on faulty intelligence as on WMD in Iraq, that these materials are finding it's way to the military reactors, then they can at will despatch a team to inspect all, repeat all, of the reactors, military and civilian to satisfy the US Congress.
This deal thus is a disaster for India's independent status. If electric power is what we want, it is better to open the economy to FDI, and privatise the transmission component of the electricity distribution in the country. By this route, our nuclear sector will be safe, and power will be available must faster and cheaper than by this bogus 'historic' deal.

PRESS RELEASE
India should fully support the stand of Israel in the recent flare-up in Lebanon. The terrorist outfit, the Hezbullah, has violated the UN Resolution 1559 requiring it to vacate the southern Lebanon border and hand over the areas to the elected Lebanon government. Instead Hezbullah militants crossed the international Lebanon--Israel border, killed six Israelis and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers back to Lebanon. This was a highly provocative act, and Israel had to retaliate. Whether it was an over-reaction or not is irrelevant. It was the wanton provocation of the Hezbollah which is behind the present Israeli action.
The Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh should ask the G-8 nations to unanimously condemn the Hezbullah and ask these terrorists to return the soldiers and also vacate the southern Lebanon areas as required by the UN Resolution.
